I'm trying to use McAfee VirusScan but the window will not open large enough to
display the scan button. Also i have noticed that my email is acting
weird. I'm getting most of my mail but some other people's as well. I
suspect a virus. How can I run VirusScan?
This answer was very helpful in solving my problem. Thx.
Hi lucyfur,
Good news - no virus!
McAFEE'S WINDOW
I can think of three things to try in regards to McAfee's window.
1) Make sure the window is maximized (middle button top right).
2) Click (& hold) on the uppermost colored bar along the top of the
window and drag the whole window up.
3) If able (hover the cursor in a corner and see if a diagonal arrow
appears), resize the window by clicking on one of the lower corners
and and dragging it down.
YOUR EMAIL
Computer viruses continue to mutate and get smarter. The chances are
good that what you are experiencing is the result of this or some
variation:
1. Jim's computer becomes infected with a virus.
2. It grabs Sue's email address from Jim's address book.
3. Rather than simply sending Sue an email from Jim, it instead puts
Sue's address in the "From" field and sends an email to Lucyfur.
4. Even though Sue's computer has never had a virus in its life, Lucyfur
will think the virus came from her when it actually came from Jim!
The latest round of super viruses did produce an increase in emails,
thankfully, it seems to be slowing down now. The important thing to
remember is to never open an attachment unless you were expecting it.
PRECAUTION
Viruses aren't the only critters who can invade your computer, there
are also parasites left by unwanted spyware. It wouldn't hurt to scan
for these also - here is a page that explains how:
Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
"What is Spyware? A technology that assists in gathering information
about a person or organization without their knowledge. On the
Internet, "spyware is programming that is put in someone's computer to
secretly gather information about the user and relay it to advertisers
or other interested parties." Even in some cases after these programs
have been removed from your system. As such, spyware is cause for
public concern about privacy on the Internet. Also in many cases
causes unknown browser problems."

hummer-ga, Thanks for info on Housecall. I had never heard of it
before. But I still have original problem. (Housecall didn't find any
virus) Now what?
Hi lucyfur,
Use one of the web-based virus scans, such as HouseCall. HouseCall is
very thorough and can take a bit of time for your first scan
(subsequent scans will be quicker) and often finds critters that
others miss.
Using Internet Explorer as your browser, click on this link, and then
"Scan Now. It's Free!".

I hope it goes well - HouseCall once found a virus on my computer that
McAfee missed, so I can definitely recommend it. If you have any
questions, please post a clarification request before closing/rating
my answer.
Thank you,
hummer
Thank you for the good news and tip - I'm glad to hear the problem has
been solved. Sincerely, hummer
